US joins UN Education First initiative

Education is a major driving force for human development, and global education multiplies positive outcomes, bringing an interconnected world together. When we equip our children with global competence – an awareness of the issues facing societies around the world – they will become better global citizens and capacitated, competent leaders of tomorrow’s societies. The United Nations has made education a priority through the GLOBAL EDUCATION FIRST INITIATIVE – GEFI, and the United States has joined as a champion county, committed to be leaders in the effort.

All of us – educators, parents, policymakers, and world leaders – desire a bright and happy future for our children and our nations. Education must help to ensure that future: a better educated world is a more prosperous world, a healthier world, and a safer world.

                                      Arnie Duncan, U.S. Secretary of Education

As we celebrate International Education Week, November 17-21, we add our own mission to a shared vision  – that every child, in every country, grows up globally competent and appreciates cultural diversity. We salute the Department of Education’s efforts to increase the global competencies of all U.S. students, learn from other countries to improve education policies and practices, and engage in active education diplomacy. Click here to read the DOE’s report on its first fully-integrated international strategy, Succeeding Globally Through International Education and Engagement. The strategy is designed to simultaneously advance the goals of strengthening U.S. education while advancing international priorities for the U.S. This strategy reflects the value and necessity of:
• a world-class education for all students;
• global competencies for all students;
• international benchmarking and applying lessons learned from other countries; and
• education diplomacy and engagement with other countries.

Learning Exchanges is positioned as a like-minded partner in these efforts. Contact us if we can help you become globally competent.
